Monday Mentions

Hello, Friends!

Another Monday Mention is being sent your way! This week the wonderful Ziba is on the hot seat!

Be sure to check her out and say “hi”!

Name: Ziba Gomes aka The Classic’s Queen (it has already caught on so I might as well accept it)
Country: Persian – living in Sweden (for now)
Instagram Name: @ziba.reads
What is your favorite book?
I’d like to meet someone who can actually answer that lol. Ok, The Beach by Alex Garland.  That’s my favorite book. 🙂
What are your hobbies (outside of reading)?
Other than reading I like to write and I’m currently working on my first novel – hopefully the first in a quadrilogy. Yay!
Growing up, what were your favorite children’s books/authors?
Growing up I used to read some scary shit: The Tales from the Crypt, remember those? No? Maybe I am just a bit older than most of you guys.
Who is your ultimate book crush?
My book crush would have to be Miles Archer in Ugly Love, first because Nick Bateman will play him in the film adaptation! And also because it’s familiar territory cause I used to be a flight attendant living in Dubai, so yeah…definitely Miles Archer.
Random facts about me:
I get bored super easy with most things haha (not you guys), I have photographic memory, I majored in science in senior high but really suck at math, and I a lot of TV shows for inspiration and script-studying. LOST is my all time favorite–ever! That’s all folks. Namaste

Review | The Walls Around Us

five stars

Lyrically written and hauntingly captivating this ghost story will imprison you until the end. Nova Ren Suma’s storytelling is as graceful and disturbing as the ballerinas she writes of. The Walls Around Us is a strange novel full of twists and bends and the essence of the novel is brilliant.

Centered around three teenage girls, this book offers more drama than a cheer-leading squad. Stacked with troubled pasts, Ori, Amber, and Violet share their story of traumatic incidents that wreck their lives one August.

This is a story about innocence, guilt, friendship, and how life is sometimes the ultimate arbitrator. The Walls Around Us is labeled for Young Readers, but friends do not be fooled, this a book for all.

Monday Mentions feat. Abeer

Hello book friends! I am starting a new segment called “Mention Mondays”  featuring a few bookstagrammers/bloggers who are super awesome and who I think you should follow!
First up is Abeer. She is super creative, an awesome photographer, and always writes the nicest comments on my Instagram photos.  To get to know her a little better I asked her a few things about herself and about some of her fave bookish things! 🙂 Go check her out.
Name: Abeer
Country: I’m originally from the Philippines but I’m currently based in Dubai for my job
Blog: superabura.wordpress.com has been my book blog since 2008 but I haven’t updated it for so long!  I’m planning to revamp it soon! Last 2014, I made my IG @lookingforabura into a bookstagram account to share my passion on reading, and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made.  Meeting new people and eventually making friends to book lovers – that’s epic.Specially for someone who is away from home, the bookstagram community keeps me sane! Haha
Currently Reading: I’m doing a buddy read for the book Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo and I’m enjoying this series so far…Also, re-reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for the #mugglesreadalong we hosted.
Fave book: Wow! I suppose this is the hardest question ever! I will have to stick with my first love, though, HARRY POTTER series.  I am also adding Neil Gaiman and F. Scott Fitzgerald books!
Interesting Fact: I have a thing with bad-boy-and-broken-girl-characters. I’m a sucker for tragic endings. But sometimes, a happily ever after doesn’t hurt.
Fave Couples: Ron and Hermonie, Anna and St. Clair, Finnick and Annie, June and Day  And Gatsby’s undying love for Daisy just like F. Scott Fitzgerald to Zelda
Reading Spot: Bed or sofa, sometimes at the bus stop.
Fave genre: I don’t really stick to one genre. I explore different worlds. And I fancy any book as long as it suits my current mood.
Other stuff: I’m really a boring person. If I’m not reading, I write blabs and do street photography. I love music but I can’t sing, I love watching coking shows and I can’t cook.
Check back next Monday for another awesome account!

Review | The Darkest Part of the Forest

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

via: Goodreads

****/5

Folklore, fairies, beautiful boys with horns, and knights. The Darkest Part of the Forest already had me at synopsis and after reading did not let me down. Holly Black goes back to her roots with this one and boy does she know how to write an enchanting tale out of the forest.

Most folklore has a dark edge to it but Holly Black keeps it pretty light, with a few spots of darkness here and there. Her pacing is spot on and if I didn’t work I would have read through the entire night. (Yes, 4 AM is “technically” not through the night). I could kiss Black for her character development. It’s predictable to a point but gender roles are switched, which deserves a firm high five in my book.

The book does have a bit more of a juvenile undertone, even for a YA book, but that may just be the folklore talking.

Overall, The Darkest Part of the Forest is a quick, fantastic, and entertaining read. I heavily recommend for anyone who is looking for quick read with a little enchantment and a touch of mystery.

5 Books sure to “Woo” you this Valentine’s Day

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single women in possession of a good fortune on Valentine’s Day must be in want of a man. However, if such a woman is unable to obtain a gentleman for the occasion, a good book is a wonderful (often better) substitute.

Therefore I introduce this post:

Valentines Day

For the true romantic…

Pride and Prejudice by Jane AustenWho could possibly be more romantic than Mr. Darcy? Mr. Darcy. Just reading his name makes you swoon. Even if you have read this classic time and time again, pick it up this holiday–I am a firm believer that no woman could ever tire from the tale of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. William Darcy.

For those who remember their first love…

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. This heart gripping story is labeled as a Young Adult, but do not be fooled it is a book for all ages. Set in the 80’s this book will rendezvous with your heart transporting you back to cassette tapes, comic books, and the stomach-achy feel of first love.

For the misfit lover…

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. If you are a fan of The Big Bang Theory, science, and a whole lot of awkwardness you will love this one. Genetics Professor, Don Tillman will have you laughing to the end with his scientific approach on life and love. This romantic comedy will offer a bright spot on your Valentine’s Day and will have you reaching for its sequel, The Rosie Effect.

For those who like a little twist…

Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay. What if the greatest love story you have ever known was a lie? What if there was far more to the story that encapsulates Romeo & Juliet? This twist offers a unique play on the biggest love story in history and opens our eyes on how to learn to love not only another but also how to love yourself.

For everybody.

How They Met and Other Stories by David Levithan. Let’s talk about love.  All kinds of love. This book offers you 18 different love stories ranging from the “sweep you off your feet” to “standing on the roof top screaming at the top of your lungs” kind.  This one will fill your heart to the very brim this Valentine’s Day and may even encourage you to make a few declarations yourself.
